Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek, world number three, was surprisingly ousted in the Roland Garros round of 16, losing in straight sets to Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk.
Kostyuk, ranked 15th in the world, defeated the four-time Parisian Grand Slam champion (2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024) with a 7-5, 6-1 scoreline in a match lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes.
With this victory, the 23-year-old Ukrainian player reaches the quarterfinals of the French tournament for the first time in her career. In the next round, she will face the winner of the match between her compatriot Elina Svitolina, ranked seventh, and Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, ranked 11th.
Swiatek's elimination guarantees that this year's Roland Garros will crown a new champion, as none of the remaining players in the competition have previously won the prestigious tournament.
American Coco Gauff, the defending champion, was also eliminated in the third round of Roland Garros, losing to Anastasia Potapova 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. The Australian player, ranked 30th in the world, prevailed over Coco Gauff, world number four, to advance to the round of 16 of the season's second Grand Slam.
