The 24-year-old defensive midfielder is a product of Barcelona's La Masia academy, from where he moved on to Valencia and then Porto. In 2025, he joined Manchester City, but after 36 appearances for the "Citizens," he transferred to Matthias Jaissle's squad.

"I am delighted that Nico has become a Newcastle player. He brings top-level quality and experience to a crucial area of the pitch," said the Magpies' manager after the new signing.

Gonzalez also expressed his excitement about joining his new team.

"I am very happy to be here, at this amazing club. I've heard nothing but praise about the club and the city, so I'm incredibly excited to live here and be a part of this project. I already love the black and white kit and can't wait to wear it on the pitch for this team," stated the new owner of the number six jersey.
