Few teams in Formula 1 carry the historical weight of McLaren. With 10 Constructors' Championships to their name and a legacy stretching back to Bruce McLaren's debut in the World Championship at Monaco in 1966, the Woking-based outfit stands as one of the sport's true institutions.
For Andrea Stella, the responsibility of upholding this heritage is not taken lightly. Earlier this season, during the Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren celebrated two remarkable milestones – 60 years since their Formula 1 debut and their 1000th Grand Prix start.
This achievement made them only the second team in history, after Ferrari, to reach this significant mark. The occasion was particularly fitting, as it was in Monaco six decades ago that Bruce McLaren's journey began.
Under Stella's leadership since the start of 2023, when McLaren found themselves at the back of the grid, the team's resurgence has been truly remarkable. A comprehensive technical overhaul transformed the squad into podium contenders within months, and by 2024, McLaren had secured their first Constructors' title in 26 years.
The following year, 2025, brought a second Constructors' title, alongside Lando Norris's maiden Drivers' Championship. Thus, before the current season commenced, the team had amassed 21 Grand Prix victories and 22 pole positions under Stella's guidance. This modern-day revival lends even greater significance to Stella's words regarding the preservation of McLaren's legacy.
"This is certainly a significant responsibility, coupled with a sense of pride that I'm sure is shared by all my colleagues in the team. It's a privilege to lead this team because of what it represents in the history and present of Formula 1, but above all, because of how the team continues to look forward and embrace challenges: striving every day to be better than yesterday. There's a hunger to win, there's energy, there's talent. There's a desire to write new chapters that live up to the tradition we carry on our shoulders, and to do so in true McLaren style," Stella commented on the team's heritage.
