Amidst Mbappé and Vinicius Controversy: Florentino Pérez and Real Madrid Representatives to Visit Ceuta
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is set to travel to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta this Friday, according to Iberian media reports. The visit is primarily institutional, and he will be accompanied by Emilio Butragueño and José Martínez "Pirri" – the honorary president of "Los Blancos," who is, incidentally, a native of Ceuta.
During his stay, Pérez is scheduled to meet with Juan Jesús Vivas, the president of the autonomous city. The purpose of the meeting is for the club to express its direct solidarity and support for Ceuta, which is currently experiencing a significant migrant crisis.
This trip comes just three days after a controversy erupted at the Martínez Valero stadium in Elche. There, Vinicius, Mbappé, and Konaté did not fully display the message on the shirts supporting Ceuta, which the players wore before the match between the local team and Real Madrid. Vinicius and Mbappé had their shirts rolled up, obscuring the slogan "We are all Caballas," while Konaté also failed to show it like his other teammates. The trio also removed the shirts during the pre-match greetings.
This incident drew widespread criticism, including from La Liga president Javier Tebas, sparking a debate with considerable public resonance. This evidently prompted Pérez to take matters into his own hands and travel to Ceuta.
Real Madrid is particularly concerned about the interpretation of the events and any doubts that might arise regarding the club's stance on Ceuta. The club supported the initiative and subsequently defended its players' freedom to make individual decisions regarding the gesture. Florentino Pérez's presence this Friday, accompanied by Pirri – one of the great legends of Real Madrid and deeply connected to his hometown – will serve to demonstrate Real Madrid's institutional support for the city.
