The controversy surrounding Julian Alvarez's future at Atlético Madrid is far from over, with those close to the player accusing the club of a deliberate attempt to destabilize him before the 2026 World Cup final, where he is scheduled to play for his native Argentina against reigning European champions Spain.

According to ESPN journalist Leo Paradiso, citing sources close to the player – such as his family or agent Fernando Hidalgo – Julian Alvarez perceived the recent statements by Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, Atlético's CEO, as a "tremendous lack of respect" and a move with "bad intentions." The dispute arose because the comments were made just 48 hours before Julian Alvarez was set to play in the World Cup final for Argentina against Spain.

The Argentine journalist emphasized that the striker's entourage believes the Madrid club acted purposefully to distract the player at the most crucial moment of his career. It's worth recalling that Gil Marín had stated Julian was "ill-advised" – a clear jab at his representative, suggesting a serious deterioration in relations between the agent and the club.

For their part, Atlético Madrid defends itself by arguing that the interview with their CEO covered various topics, not solely the future of the player known as "The Spider." The club justifies the timing of the interview by stating their intention to express pride in having nine World Cup finalists across the Argentina and Spain squads.

Atlético also points out that it was Julian Alvarez himself who raised the question of his future during the World Cup, while his team was still competing. The club highlights that the player's statements were made on the same day Lionel Messi achieved a historic record for "La Albiceleste," partially overshadowing the achievement of his national team's biggest star.

The Spanish club's management insists that it was not Atlético who brought the topic to the forefront, but the player himself, advised by his agent, which then triggered a media frenzy.

Gil Marín's statements were unequivocal regarding a potential transfer, closing the door on any negotiations, especially with Barcelona.

"We don't want to sell him. We won't accept an offer of 100 million euros, nor 150, nor 200 million. I have no doubt that Atlético is the ideal place in the world for Julian... and he will not play for Barcelona next season," the CEO declared in the aforementioned interview.

The match between Argentina and Spain is scheduled for tomorrow, July 19th (Sunday), at 10:00 PM Bulgarian time. This, along with all 104 matches of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, can be watched live on bnt.sportal.bg.
