The World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada has triggered another coaching change. The Algerian national team is set to part ways with head coach Vladimir Petković following their elimination in the Round of 16.
The Desert Foxes suffered a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, and according to local media reports, the decision to terminate his contract has already been made. The Algerian Football Federation is expected to officially confirm the news later today.
Petković took charge of the national team in the winter of 2024, with his contract running until the summer of 2028. Despite the long-term agreement, the early World Cup exit proved decisive for his future.
Among the leading candidates to succeed him is Hervé Renard, who currently manages the Tunisian national team and took on that role during the World Cup.
Following the loss to Switzerland, Algeria's captain and star player, Riyad Mahrez, also announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to one of the most successful eras in the team's history.
