A Crushing Blow Instead of a Peaceful Journey. World Cup Referee Deeply Affected by Colleague's Death

On Monday morning, the football world was shocked by the sudden news of referee Rob Dieperink's passing, impacting not only the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) but also his colleagues. Danny Makkelie, who officiated matches at this year's World Cup, reacted emotionally to the tragedy.

Rob Dieperink passed away unexpectedly at the age of 38. Dutch police subsequently investigated around his residence and concluded that no other individuals were involved in his death. However, due to the family's privacy, they declined to provide further details.

"This morning, I received the heartbreaking news that my friend, colleague, and team member Rob Dieperink suddenly passed away. Nothing else seems important now. We just spoke during the World Cup, and now he's gone. It's surreal and hard to comprehend.

Sadness, disbelief, and despair prevail. In moments like these, you realize how relative football, and indeed everything in life, truly is. Many things we deal with daily suddenly become utterly meaningless.

My thoughts are first and foremost with his family, partner, friends, and everyone who loved him. I wish them immense strength during this unimaginably difficult time. Rest in peace, Rob. We will miss you terribly," Danny Makkelie wrote on LinkedIn.

The experienced referee, who has been active in professional football for over 15 years, had only recently learned that his World Cup duties were over and he could return home. Instead of a peaceful journey, Makkelie was met with the news of the death of his long-time colleague, whom he knew very well.

Rob Dieperink Missed Out on World Cup Participation

The deceased official was also originally slated to appear at the World Cup, but in the role of a video assistant referee. However, FIFA decided to withdraw him from the tournament after his arrest in England, where Dieperink was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting a 17-year-old boy. He was later cleared of charges by investigators due to lack of evidence.
