"I have the best idea for a book. Too bad I don't have time to write it!"

Nigerian Writers are very brilliant, no doubt but i have heard some of them uttered some things that would make you cringe.

Here are some of the worst things writers have said to me lately:

1. "I quit my job, because I'm writing a best seller!"

Quit your job based on a book that has not being published yet? Really? Stories of J.K Rowlingmight serve as out inspiration but that is just one out of one million. Aside from writing your book, make sure you have a job, a job that actually pay your bills.

2. "I have the best idea for a book. Too bad I don't have time to write it!"

Many Nigerian writers love to talk about what they're "thinking about writing." But here's the thing: Nobody really has the time, if you are really passionate about writing, please create the time.

3. " I only sell my books on amazon and at a bookshop in Abuja"

I guess that means, people who want to buy your books should travel to Abuja yeah? Amazon does not work effectively and it does not deliver to Nigeria. Make a deal with so many bookshops in Nigeria, so that people can discover your books. Don't forget to put your books on goodreads too.

4. "I'm trying to decide whether it's better to make a living writing fiction or nonfiction."

Stop it! Creating novels, essays, poems and short stories takes passion and dedication. Selling them takes the stubbornness of a Nigerian politician. If you want to be a writer, go with the flow. If there's no flow, do something else.

5. "I got this really great rejection letter from a great agent who says she'd love my book if I just change the point of view and cut it down. But I can't do that. That's not my vision!"

Wrong. That may be your vision, but it's their marketplace. Unless you win a Booker prize or the Nobel, or sell like Chimamanda Adichie, you'd better expect to make compromises along the way. Remember Harper Lee and what she did to sell To Kill a Mockingbird?
