Nigerians have a funny and weird relationship with food. If you grew up in Nigeria, there is a 100% chance that you have encountered all of these awkward food moments.

1. Visitors who look away when you are bringing food

You know when you visit someone and you are waiting for the food to be served so you try not to seem too eager and look away when the food is brought to you.

You make sure you do not eat everything on the plate. You might even wait for a few minutes before you start eating so you do not seem hungry.

2. Visitors, who say ‘won’t you ask me to join you?’

Here you are eating your food and a visitor comes in, then they joke about coming to join you and you start to wonder, are they joking or serious? It’s truly uncomfortable. Then you ask them to join you and they say no.

Alternatively, Nigerian will say ‘come and join me' and will not offer you a spoon, or give you a chance to eat out of the food.

3. Nigerians who tell their kids not to take food from strangers and the kids pass the message along to you

Have the neighbour’s kids ever come to visit you and ask you for food while they say, “My mummy said I should not collect food from you?” So why are you here begging for food? You think to yourself and wonder if you should give the child the food.

4. Visitors who insist on not eating

You'll think you are some evil demon the way they will refuse to eat your food. I had an uncle whose church doctrine warned them not to eat at visitors’ houses, especially during special occasions like Christmas, so no matter what you offer them they will never eat it.

Nigerians have this distrust for each other and probably feel that they are trying to poison one another.

Which other funny mannerisms did I miss?
