Sharapova has now made it a third straight final in the French Open and the 27 year-old Russian will be hoping to avoid the disappointment of last year where she lost Serena Williams in the final.

The Russian fought hard to a victory of 4-6 7-5 6-2 against a hard fighting Bouchard in a time of 2 hours 27 minutes and will face Simona Halep who also overcame Germany's Andrea Petkovic 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to reach her first ever final in any Grand Slam.

Bouchard who has been an admirer of the current WTA number 7 put up a fight, enough to make Sharapova sweat for her victory.

Having lost the first set, the 2012 winner frantically played out her wits to a second set win before finally sealing the win in the third and final set.

Sharapova really hasn't had a fiery test from among the top seeds but she has been able to maintain the record of overcoming opponents in the third as she did Samantha Stosur and Garbine Muguruza.

Young Bouchard may not have played into the other sets, giving away a first set win advantage but caused stirs for the straight hitting Russian who could not contend with powerful, flat hits from both wings which left her tennis 'idol' scrambling for a safe return of the serves and shots.
