The cause of the accident was overloading of the boat carrying 130 people.
"The boat sank because it was overloaded and unfit to transport so many passengers. 91 people lost their lives," said Jaime Neto, secretary of state in the northern province of Nampula. Among the victims were several children.
According to Neto, most of the passengers tried to escape from the continent due to false information about the ongoing cholera epidemic.
