15 Nigerians arrested, accused of cultism in Italy
The arrests were made after a disgruntled member of the group reached out to authorities.
The police accused the suspects in a statement on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 of being members of cult group, Eiye confraternity, which has roots in Nigeria.
They allegedly belong to the Pesha cell which has influence on the entire Adriatic coastal area from Teramo to Ancona.
"The number of crimes committed by members of the mafia organisation is impressive: money laundering and illegal financial intermediation towards Nigeria; trafficking in young women sexually exploited along the Bonifica del Tronto road and subjected to violence and harassment; drug supply; violent crimes against members of other groups or punitive towards other compatriots," the statement read.
The arrests were made after a disgruntled member of the group reached out to authorities after he was allegedly brutalised for violating some of the cult's rules.
The Police said the detained suspects will be prosecuted soon.
Four members of the cult group remain at large.
