Cracked phone screen? This repair service comes right to you

Which is why when, over a sidewalk dinner in Manhattan's Greenwich village, my beloved X slipped from my pocket and fell 1-foot to the concrete, I gasped audibly, and held my breath while I cautiously picked it up, praying it was intact.

My heart plummeted when I saw the dreaded spiderweb of doom that you hope never spreads across your screen. Worse, the back had also cracked. After my disappointment dissolved into anger, I resolved to get it fixed as fast as possible. However, getting a trashed screen fixed by Apple is a seriously expensive proposition, if you didn't opt for AppleCare+ coverage-which I did not.

My Apple X cost $1,000 new, and under Apple's pricing options for non-warranty phones(which is any instance where you simply drop the unit), it's $279 to fix the front screen. The back-which only Apple is authorized to fix because of the wireless charging components-is equally pricey. I couldn't justify spending half the cost of the phone to fix the thing, even if it is my most prized possession.

Instead I called Puls, a service that comes directly to you and fixes Apple, Google, and Samsung phones and tablets in your office or home, in under an hour. Godsends.

To be perfectly clear, for the Apple X, Puls isn't much cheaper. It's $259 for X screen repair. (The real savings start to come if you've got an older model: Puls charges $79 for an iPhone 6 screen versus Apple's $149.) However, with dealing with Puls was a breeze and what you may not be saving in your wallet, you're saving in time, an arguably more valuable commodity. Here's why I loved using Puls to fix my iPhone screen.

Puls Is Absurdly Prompt

The scheduling took less than five minutes, and the technician arrived to my office exactly on time. It was so much easier than going to the Apple store and waiting forever for a technician to free up.

The Puls Technician Is Lightning

The speed of the swap was impressive as hell. The guy was done in 15 minutes and did it all right in front of me. There's not a ton to the process, which is perhaps why the Apple people bring your phone into the back, because if you saw how simple it was, you'd balk at the price more. The tech was also supremely knowledgable, and walked me through each step and provided detail about what he was doing and why.

Watching Your Phone Have Surgery Is Illuminating

I know the iPhone X is said to be waterproof, but when you see your phone with the screen removed, the only thing keeping pesky liquids from frying delicate circuitry is a thin line of sticky adhesive around the edges. I do have the utmost faith in Apple, but I'll also be far more careful around drinks in the future.

Puls Is Quality

We're a month out from the technician's fix and I've had zero problems and issues with the phone. Could it be cheaper? Sure, but you're paying for expedience, expertise, and convenience and it's hard to put a price on those things.
