While heartache is a lot of ice cream and drinking, we know for a fact that you would never survive your own wedding without this one person by your side - Your best friend; but sure we can see why you thought we'd say the groom.
Here are 8 things your best friend does for your wedding. And why she rocks!
1. Plans and throws you a bachelorette party:
Lets call Bachelorette parties in Nigeria what they really are "Shots + Tiara and Sash + Giggling over a random phallic shaped object". Unless you've planned months in advance and are distracted by a beach somewhere, you're probably stuck in the city and your best friend is the one organising dirty cupcakes, filthy games, glow in the dark shot glasses and struggling to get your three different girlfriend groups to get along. Pledge blood allegiance to her if she organises a party bus for you.
2. Goes shopping with you:
Every bride worth her salt knows that her wedding is a silent, personal challenge to the Dubai Shopping Festival. It's your best friend then, who patiently scours Bridal Shows with you, deconstructs the merits of an Ankara versus a lace fabric and looks at so many Aso-ebi(s) that she almost writes off marriage as an option for herself.
3. Helps you find your inner beauty:
Remember the ‘makeover' episode of America's Next Top Model where Tyra Banks went around and assured every scared, hysterical, bulimic model that a mullet was in fact ‘fierce'? That's what your best friend will do for you whether you have a botched smoky eye situation or bags under your eyes from when you couldn't sleep because you had to stay awake stressing and screaming at everyone like a newly-born Charlie Sheen. She will remind you that you're the most beautiful bride there ever was and she will mean it. Most of the time.
4. Makes friends with your weird cousin/ crazy aunt
You know, the one cousin who probably stares too much, talks too much, dances too close or wants all your friends to add him on Facebook that very minute? It's your best friend who will make polite conversation with him or at least direct him towards the bar before he insists on "burning up the dance floor" again. Ditto any vulgar aunts, crazy aunts and pessimistic aunts.
5. Assists you with basic motor functions:
How incapacitated a bride becomes is directly proportional to how close her wedding day is. It's your best friend who will help you wash your hair because the bridal makeup studio is "a dry zone only", hum politely while lifting your 300 kilo bridal gown as you try to pee and silently refill your drink anytime she catches you having to mingle with more than four family members at any given time.
6. Hangs out with you... whenever, even in your bridezilla phase:
Face it, if you're a bride to be , you've probably sworn off most food groups and alcohol. Even though what you really, really need is a stiff drink. The diet has helped you lose several inches and many friends. It's only your best friend then, who will sacrifice her weekend evenings to watch you pick at a salad while you tell her over and over again how you're always tired and stressed out. Get her extra beers and marvel at her tolerance.
7. Keeps calm and lets you (bride-to) be:
Not losing patience will be her biggest gift to you; other than her taking in months of you stressing, obsessing, analysing excel sheets and quoting wedding blogs. Special mention, to her wondering along with you why you have so many friends and must invite them all? Only to help you plan bloody murder, a few months later, on those who decided not to come.
Face it, she's the reason you were able to say ‘I Do'.
