Apart from the two children who died in the fire, the landlord of the house, Hon. Muyideen Jinadu was also killed when he attempted to rescue the burning kids.
According to residents, the fire started after the woman had gone to visit a relative who had earlier put to bed in the compound with her kids.
While trying to make a fire to cook for the new born mother, the mother of the kids' attempt to switch on the gas cooker went wrong and the gas exploded, engulfing the house on fire.
She was able to escape from the burning house with the new mother and her baby while the two kids were trapped.
The brother to the owner of the house, Alhaji Babatunde Muyideen, said he woke up that morning to find that his brother’s home had been razed by fire.
"We are sad about my brother’s death. He was the head of our family. It was around 8am that I saw fire and smoke coming out from one of the tenants’ kitchen.
The fire quickly spread to other apartments. We later discovered that the fire resulted from a cooking gas which the mother of the two children that died attempted to put on.
We never knew the children were in the compound. The mother of the children is nowhere to be found. She ran away after the fire outbreak."
