Popular gold-painted statue of communist founding father destroyed
The popular but controversial gold-painted statue of communist founding father Mao Zedong has been destroyed after it apparently lacked government approval.
After the 3 million yuan (200 million Naira) structure was destroyed, local officials says the reason for destroying the statue was "unclear".
The statue shows the great Mao Zedong sitting in thoughtful repose with his hands crossed.
Observers have criticised the statue, pointing out that it had been positioned in the centre of the region worst hit by famine in the late 1950s.
It is believed as many as 40 million people died as a result of Mao's economic policies at that time.
Despite being blamed for millions of deaths, Mao is still widely revered in China and credited with uniting the country.
