Gas explosion leaves 3 dead, 10 injured
Four families were reportedly affected by the gas explosion which took place at about 7pm on Sunday, July 17, at 32, Osazuwa Street, off Benin-Agbor Expressway in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The victims were confirmed dead after a five-kilogramme gas cylinder exploded at a residential building at 32, Osazuwa Street, off Benin-Agbor Expressway in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
Listed among the deceased are siblings, Favour Godwin, 11 and Odion Godwin, two, as four families were reportedly affected by the explosion which occurred at about 7pm on Sunday, July 17, 2016.
One of the injured victims, Ese Egharevba, whose husband and two children were affected, disclosed that she was outside her apartment when she heard the explosion.
They reportedly found the gas cylinder which was immediately taken outside, while her husband warned neighbours to avoid striking a match, but unknown to them, another family was cooking inside.
As soon as one of the children attempted to open the door of the apartment, the building was immediately engulfed in fire.
Christian Unuame, a teacher, revealed that the owner of the cylinder had not been living in the building, adding:
“Nobody in the house uses gas to cook. It was somebody that kept the cylinder in my neighbour’s room. I’ve just finished my national service. I am teaching.”
The victims were reportedly admitted at Enoma Hospital while the mother of the siblings and her eldest daughter were referred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
