Policeman in trouble for hitting eight-month-old baby with tricycle

The police officer responsible for the accident has taken responsible for the medical bills of the victims.

A police officer hit the mother and her baby while riding to the Police Station.

A police officer known as Mark, has gotten into trouble after hitting a woman, Maryam Oniyemi, and her eight-month-old baby, Jamiu Oniyemi, with a tricycle at Isheri Oshun, Lagos.

Mark had just seized a tricycle and was riding it to the Isheri Oshun Police Division when he ran into Maryam and her son, causing injuries to them.

According to Punch, observers at the scene, reportedly furious by the accident, forced Mark to take the two to a private hospital for treatment.

The accident caused serious concern for Ismaila Oniyemi, who is both husband and father to the accident victims.

Islamaila, who is a mechanic, explained that accident has led occupied him to a large extent. He no longer has time for his work.

“My wife was returning from her sister’s place on the day. Our eight-month-old boy was strapped to her back."

"When she got to the Water Corporation junction on Police Road, also called Iyana Isheri Road, the policeman hit them with a tricycle and they fell."

“Onlookers attested to the fact that the policeman hit them by the roadside. My wife said Jamiu was removed from under the tricycle. He sustained injuries in the head."

"The policeman was said to have seized the tricycle from a rider and he was taking it to the police station. But he probably could not ride it well  and the accident occurred."

“Both victims were rushed here (hospital) and they are responding to treatment. But this incident has affected my work. The DPO has been supportive. He has been coming to visit us since last Tuesday.”

 SP Dolapo Badmos, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the accident.

She stated that Mark has taken responsibility for the accident, and has rendered financial support to sort out the medical needs of the accident victims.
