One dead, many injured as boiling water flood Swedish street

Water of almost boiling point flooded a street in a Swedish town killing one person and leaving several injured.

A bizarre hot water flood on a street in Sweden left one man dead and many in injured.

The injuries and death happened when a bus crashed in a torrent of near-boiling water which had flooded the streets.

About gallons of 88C water burst out from a broken heating pipe and swamped the Lund city centre.

The emergency services believe the source of the leak was a fractured district heating pipe.

The mist from the flames of the hot water reduced visibility which is believed to have made the bus driver to lose control of his vehicle and plough into a group of pedestrians, including the man who died.

According to police report, the crash happened around 7.15pm, an hour after the flooding began.

As a result of the hot water with a reported temperature of 88 degrees flooding, local residents were seen using wooden pallets to walk precariously down the streets to avoid burning themselves.

“I don't know what I can say. It is totally crazy. There is water everywhere. It's unreal,” a resident, Lina Aspegren told the TT news agency.

Lund is a town in the southern province of Scania, and is home to Lund University, one of Scandanavia's largest institutions for education.
