The movies on this list have wowed audience and some of the best critics after their release in cinemas in 2018.

1. New Money
‘New Money’ is one of the movies that made 2018 a great year for lovers of Nollywood.
Shot by Tope Oshin, the movie had an interesting theme which resonates with an average Nigerian.
The movie combines fiction and reality to give a fine storyline which was well interpreted by the cast that include Dakore Akande, Kate Henshaw, Jemima Osunde and Jemima Osunde.
The movie had good reviews from film critics and viewers alike.
Mummy Dearest: The Wedding
When Willis Ikedum decided to release the sequel to his film, ‘Mummy Dearest’, not many gave him a chance.
However, the release of Mummy Dearest: The Wedding’ was one of the blessings of Nollywood in 2018.
The movie, which features Liz Benson Ameye, Chris Okagbue, Daniel K Daniel, Uti Nwachukwu and Melvin Oduah, gave audience the viewing pleasure of enjoying the sterling performance of one of Nollywood’s veteran, Liz Benson again.
Sergeant Tutu
‘Sergeant Tutu’ didn’t come across like the movie that will interest the Nollywood world but interestingly, the movie turned out to be a worthy venture.
Focused on the life and trials of a police officer who ranks as a Sergeant, ‘Sergeant Tutu’ gives life to investigative genre of Nollywood movie.
The movie is not like the regular investigative movie, it ranks in the likes of Kunle Afolayan’s ‘October 1.’
The movie also mirrors the current possibilities in the Nigerian police force where a diligent officer has a crooked officer as superior.
King Of Boys
Kemi Adetiba’s ‘King Of Boys’ is one of the many movies that enjoyed accolades from movie critics and movie lovers across Nigeria.
The ability to dare to produce and direct a three-hour long movie remains one of the most daunting steps taken by the leading filmmaker.
A political thriller in the age of comedy, the movie shone like a bright star for seven weeks as the number one movie in cinemas across Africa.
'King of Boys' features Sola Sobowale, who gives a stellar performance a Alhaja Eniola Salami, a businesswoman and philanthropist, who is the centre of the movie.
The movie also brought out the acting abilities of rapper, Reminisce, who gave an award-winning performance in his first movie role as Makanaki. Other members of cast brought their A-game to fore and this had an overall effect of success on the movie.
The movie also features Jide Kosoko, Adesua Etomi Wellington, Toni Tones, Ill Bliss, Funlola Aofiyebi Raimi and many others.
Esohe
Charles Uwagbai’s "Esohe," brought back lovely memories of the history of Edo land.
The epic goes back to the reincarnation and reunion of Ifagbai, the son of Eghosa the Oba’s warrior, his long-lost lover, Esohe, which presents a puzzle to Gary Barbar.
The ability to make the movie relevant to millenials and all ages of movie lovers despite its deep rooted Edo theme, remains one of its selling points.
From Toyin Abraham to Jimmy Jean Louis, Chris Attoh, Jemima Ounde, Omoeye Uzamere, Bimbo Manuel and Desmond Elliot, the movie cast gave a wonderful performance.
The Royal Hibiscus Hotel
"Royal Hibiscus Hotel," is a regular Nigerian movie but with a theme that appeals to the biracials with Nigerian and British origin.
The story of a disillusioned London chef, who visits Nigeria and struggles with dealing with her matchmaking mother aside restoring the family's rundown hotel is not totally an uncommon one in Nigeria but the British infused humour made the Ishaya Bako directed movie a success.
With a London born and trained Zainab Balogun playing the lead role, it was easy for Deyemi Okanlawon, Kenneth Okolie, Akah Nnani, and Kemi Lala Akindoju to bring their A-game to the movie.
Date Night
‘Date Night’ reminds you of the Nollywood movies released in the late 90s and 2000s but with a twist that follows the current happening around the world.
The movie tells the story of a man, who is held hostage by a woman he brings home for the night, and an intense struggle for survival follows.
‘Dark Night’ joins some of the best thrillers Nollywood produced in 2018 considering the twist in the tale, storyline and character interpretation by some of the accomplished stars in Nollywood.
Directed by Daniel Oriahi, the movie stars Deyemi Okanlawon, Adesua Etomi and Ogechi Peters.
Alexandra
A tale of love, passion and revenge, "Alexandra" tells the story of a young Nigerian woman, who meets and falls in love with an American online.
The plot is one easily understood by Nigerians in Nigeria and abroad.
The story becomes relatable to many individual, who have had their family members travel abroad to live with their spouses and tales that follow this process.
The movie, which won itself an AMAA in Rwanda, was shot by Robert Peters and features Vivica Fox, Joseph Benjamin, Ada Ameh, Robert Hays and Freda Steffl.
Black Rose
Okechukwu Oku tells the story of a female known as Rose in his 2018 effort, ‘Black Rose.’
Starring Blossom Chukwujekwu, Ebele Okaro, Lilian Echelon and Betty Bellor, the movie comes in two halves: the first and the second half.
While one half depicts the common hardship that befalls widows in Nigeria, the second half leaves the viewers blaming the character for getting lost in the world after clinching an opportunity to give back to the poor widow.
The intrigue in ‘Black Rose’ is one of the best things that happened to Nollywood in 2018.
