Why Burna Boy is part of a bigger problem

Burna Boy's latest alleged mess is a part of a bigger celebrity culture in Nigeria.

Burna Boy shows off new look

As expected Burna Boy was dragged on Twitter for his naive assumption of sleeping with a woman just once cannot lead to pregnancy.

While Burna Boy deserves all the knocks he is getting on social media, he is not the only Nigerian singer or celebrity who has raw sex with a woman who he hardly knows.

A majority of his contemporaries have kids with women that can be tagged as booty calls or one night stands. This is the reality of the celebrity culture in Nigeria.

There are many more male Nigerian celebrities who have kids with ‘strange bedfellows’.  It’s very common in this industry of ours. Most of them are carefully hidden away from the public and blogs that is why you don’t hear about them.

Not trying to be a saint but it is irresponsible for a man not to accept the fact that he impregnated a woman. This also applies to a celebrity. As a result of the lax laws we have in Nigeria, a man can impregnate a woman and disown her afterwards without taking responsibility of his child. There are so many Nigerian celebrities who haven’t taken responsibility of their children littered everywhere.

In advanced parts of the world, once the paternity of a baby has been determined the father is responsible for the upkeep of that child. In Nigeria this is not so as a man can leave a woman high and dry after having his wicked ways with her.

What Burna Boy has done (allegedly) is not an isolated case of stupidity, it is just an example of the backward celebrity culture we have in Nigeria where male celebs can sleep with a woman, put her in the family way and abandon her with no legal repercussions.

If it is true that Burna Boy is the father of the child I won’t be surprised about the most likely outcome- nothing will happen. It is our way in Nigeria.

Burna Boy’s latest controversy is a snapshot of the way our male celebrities live- have unprotected sex with women and don’t own up to their responsibilities.
