"I beg that you respect our family's privacy during our time of grief," she wrote.

According to Biography.com, Abdulmajid was a gynecologist and named her daughter Iman, which means “faith” in Arabic, to steel her against the trials she’d face growing up as a girl in Muslim East Africa.

Iman's parents, both activists, fought for Somalia's independence in 1960, the model said in a 2014 Guardian interview.

Iman lost her husband, Bowie after a battle with liver cancer at the age of 69 in New York City at his Manhattan family home on 10 January.
