Garbine Muguruza was pleased to come through what could have been a tricky clash against Kirsten Flipkens with relative ease.

The Spanish third seed claimed a 6-4 6-2 win on Rod Laver Arena to book her spot in the third round at Melbourne Park.

Muguruza had met the Belgian twice before, including losing to the 30-year-old on grass in 2013.

But her display on Thursday left her happy with her ability to deal with an opponent with a different style.

"It's a great win. I know Kirsten. I played against her two times before and I knew it was going to be a complicated match, because she doesn't have the common style of other women on the tour," Muguruza said.

"I'm pretty happy about my performance."
