Nadal faces a third-round clash with world number 63 Mikhail Kukushkin as he attempts to secure the men's singles title for a third time.

The Spaniard lost the first set against Martin Klizan before getting into his stride and securing an opportunity to exact revenge on Rosol.

US and French Open champion Nadal was beaten in five sets by Rosol in 2012 and must have feared he would be in for another marathon encounter when the world number 52 took the first set.

Rosol claimed the only break of the opener to lead 5-4 and served out the set to love in impressive fashion, punching the air in delight as he claimed the initiative.

Nadal must have feared the worst when the underdog broke to lead 3-2 in the next set, but the second seed hit back to force a tie-break and levelled the match when his opponent double-faulted.

Early breaks in each of the next two sets then enabled Nadal to secure victory and there was no hiding his relief as saved a break point before completing victory.
