Enyimba of Aba entered the 2014 FED Cup final against Dolphins with the hurt of the painful loss of the NPFL with the week 37 1-1 draw away at the liberation stadium to the Port Harcourt based club still fresh in their minds.
Under the eyes of a near half full stadium, highest goal scorer of the just concluded NPFL 2013/2014 season, Mfon Udoh shot the Elephants into the lead in the early minute of the second 45 to bring life to the dull moment at the venue and probably drill a chill down the throats of the fans who must have been worrying about the hot weather
They were fine to shoot twice into the lead through the same man but missed a breather of that chance
With time ticking away and tensions rising in the camps of the two sides, Enyimba went 2-0 up through Chinonso Okonkwo, snipping past the Dolphins goal line setting themselves up for a sweet revenge over Stanley Eguma and his lads and breaking the opponents’ record of wins in every FED Cup final they have played in
Prior to the November 23 clash, the Port Harcourt based side have been in four finals in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2007 where they won all.
Dolphins did try to push the game into extra time when goal master, Emem Eduok pulled one back for the four time champions, but that was not enough to deny Enyimba the title the second consecutive time
With the temperature cooling down a bit whilst the sun set at the stadium, Kadiri Ikhana and his lads cruised to a 2-1 win over
Dolphins, bringing the 2013/2014 football season to a victorious end, with qualification to the 2015 CAF Champions League and the Fed Cup in their trophy cabinet for another year.
For playing in the final, Dolphins will represent Nigeria in next year’s CAF Confederations Cup.
Earlier on in the day, another Rivers state club, Rivers Angels triumphed over their opponents from Ondo, Sunshine 2-0 in the female category of the same championship.
