Nigerian captain Joseph Yobo has quit international call ups and appearance in the aftermath of the Super Eagles defeat to the France in their last 16 tie at the Nacional Estadion, Brasilia in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The Eagles playing France the first time in a World Cup, having defeated them back in 2009 in an international friendly held the French team for the better first hour of the game before finally giving in to a Paul Pogba header in the 79 minute before finally wrapping up the wrath 2 minutes after regulation time with an own goal from the retiring defender.

It wasn’t exactly the way Yobo would have wanted his 101 and final appearance for the three time Africa champions to be but his retirement from the National team followed: “I would have loved to have done it differently.”

Yobo retires as the first and only Nigerian to have reached the 100 international caps, appearing at three World Cups and winning the Nations Cup.

“I’m moving on with life.

“It’s time to spend more time with the family and focus on club football. I’d like to thank the Nigeria fans and thank all the players. It’s been a pleasure, it’s been wonderful.

“I won the African Nations Cup, came this far at a World Cup I never thought I’d make because of injury. Hopefully [the young players] will carry on from here. We have done a lot of things behind the scenes, put a lot of hard work in together, As a leader, they know what I’ve brought in so it’s just to carry on where we finished,” Yobo said to the admiration of many.
