Syli Nationale failed to seize the opportunity of finishing as Group B winners after they lost 2-1 to Zimbabwe in their final group match. Four points was however enough for them2 to finish as runners-up and will not find it easy against the Gambians in this round.

Indeed, the Scorpions are having a debut AFCON to remember after going unbeaten in Group F (W2 D1), finishing behind Mali with a joint seven points and ahead of Tunisia. With the solid form they have shown so far, the West Africans will believe they can go far in this tournament, and what a fairy tale that would be.

Guinea have reached the knockout phase of AFCON on five occasions but have never failed to go past the first round. There is every chance they can finally break the jinx but they will be wary of a Gambia side that scored in all their group games. If Kaba Diawara’s men manage to pull through, it most likely will not be with a clean sheet.

Cameroon vs Comoros

The AFCON 2021 hosts have stamped their authority as one of the favourites to win the tournament, going unbeaten and topping Group A. Facing the less-fancied Comorians will give the Indomitable Lions a better shot at making it into the quarter-finals.

The Coelacanths, like debutants Gambia, had a memorable group phase, defeating four-time champions Ghana, which was good enough as one of the best third-place finishers. Comoros are still minnows in this tournament, but their determination and fighting spirit could be crucial here once again.

Cameroon were the highest-scoring side in the group stage with seven goals. They are also the only team whose matches produced two or more goals. It is expected that they will overpower Comoros owing to the unavailability of odds by bookies. Goals should therefore be the main feature at the Olembe Stadium on Monday evening.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals
