Carlos Tevez could not save Boca Juniors from defeat to River Plate

Tevez who just returned to Argentina from Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua was in action for the entirety of the match.

River Plate defeated their eternal rivals in the highly intense final to win the trophy.

Gonzalo Martinez scored the opening goal of the game for River Plate in the 17th minute, after the referee gave a penalty for a foul on Ignacio Fernandez.

Boca Juniors tried as much as possible to equalise before the break, and they created many chances to score.

River Plate were able to resist the repeated pressure by Boca and in the 70th minute sealed the result when Ignacio Scocco slotted in a well worked team move.

The two rivals have only met in one other final which was in 1976, which Boca won.

The final result means that River Plate has avenged the 1976 defeat.

River Plate and Boca Juniors return to league action in the Argentine Primera Division against Belgrano and Atletico Tucuman respectively on Sunday, March 18.
