Kim, 22, seized control of the first major on the LPGA calendar by sinking a six-foot eagle putt for a seven-under-par 65 at Mission Hills Country Club.

The eagle broke a tie with overnight leader Morgan Pressel as Kim, who only bogeyed one hole, reached seven under through 36 holes in Rancho Mirage, California.

Pressel was unable to replicate her opening round after the American struggled with her swing on day two.

After hitting a 67 on Thursday, Pressel dropped three shots for a five-under-par 72 a day later.

"It was a little sloppy all around," Pressel said.

"My swing wasn't quite as sharp as it was yesterday, and I kind of made some sloppy bogeys and some really good pars."

American Brittany Lincicome (68) - the 2009 champion, South Korean Jenny Shin (69) and Scotland's Catriona Matthew (69) are three shots off the pace at four under heading into the penultimate round.

Meanwhile, world number one Lydia Ko's bid to eclipse the LPGA Tour record for consecutive rounds under par came to an end on Friday.

Ko, who posted a first-round 71 to equal Annika Sorenstam's record, could only manage a one-over-par 73.
