The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed an emergency team to two local government areas in Kogi state to respond to a distress call about an imminent flood on Thursday, September 7, 2017.
The affected areas of the state indicated by the agency are communities in Sarkin Noma, Ganaja in Lokoja LGA, and Igala Mela LGA.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued by the agency's spokesperson, Sani Datti, who warned people living in communities in the affected areas to relocate to higher grounds for safety.
He said, "NEMA has received a distressed call of eminent flood in Sarkin Noma, Ganaja in Lokoja LGA and Igala Mela LGA of Kogi State.
"Following the alert, NEMA has immediately established contact with the State Commissioner for Environment, Kogi SEMA and other stakeholders. A team is due to arrive the state for appropriate action to the affected persons and communities.
"NEMA strongly advises the communities living around the flood plains to immediately relocate to higher grounds for safety to avoid the danger of the eminent flood."
This emergency comes on the back of the ongoing flood crisis in Benue that's estimated to have displaced 110,000 people.
