New mobile court arrests 52 violators, convicts 41 for traffic offences

Less than a week after the inauguration of Lagos State Mobile Court, 52 arrests have been made.

On Friday, February 5th, Lagos state inaugurated mobile courts, which were launched on Monday, February 8th.

Two days after the launch, 52 traffic and environmental offenders were arrested by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force).

In a public statement, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, Task Force Public Affairs Officer, said 14 people were arrested within Agege, 22 from Oshodi and 16 at areas in Apapa.

More details of the persecution were also revealed.

"Two motorcyclists and four tricycle revenue collectors that were also prosecuted, had their cases struck out for lack of proper documentary evidence. Trial in the cases of the remaining five tricycle operators have been adjourned till Thursday, Feb. 11.

The adjournment was to enable prosecuting counsel, Mr produce and tender videos and pictures of exact location of arrest from Mr , the police officer who Led the operations from the Lagos State Task Force, as evidence to guide the court’s proceedings."

The arrests were made because of offences punishable under Section 10 (1) (a) Street Trading and Illegal Markets Prohibition Law of 2003.

Fines were offered as options to three to six months imprisonment.
