First Lady grateful to Nigerians for standing by President Buhari

The First Lady has shown gratitude to the president's well-wishers while he was ill in London.

President Buhari returned to Nigeria on Saturday, August 19, 2017, 103 days after he left for London to resume treatment for an undisclosed illness.

Taking to her Twitter account on Monday, August 21, the First Lady tweeted, "As we welcome our dear President back home, I am grateful to Nigerians and well wishers all over the world for their continuous prayers and support.

"May God continue to guide, protect and bless us all and our dear country Nigeria."

Despite the presidency's insistence on the president's good health while he was away, his extended medical vacation generated a lot of controversies and sparked protests that have demanded his resignation, and counter-protests that supported him.

On Monday, during his first national address to the country since his return, President Buhari also expressed his happiness at his eventual return.

He said, "I am very grateful to God and to all Nigerians for their prayers. I am pleased to be back on home soil among my brothers and sisters."
