World bank give $30m to support climate change

Speaking during this year’s celebration as Nigeria marks the World Environment Day with the theme “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”, the World Bank has said it is providing the sum of $30 million as critical support for Nigeria’s response to climate change.

Mr Amos, a representative of World Bank stated that the Bank is in strong partnership with the federal government, particularly with ministry of environment in identifying key priority environmental issues.

He said this partnership will help revise land and other forms of degradation in the country.

”We are also supporting the efforts of the ministry and government in revising the unacceptable vibes rate of deforestation.”

While urging that resources are consumed with care, he said we should take into consideration how our personal consumption impact our immediate environment.

The permanent secretary of the ministry of environment also stated that there is evidence that humanity is consuming more natural resources than the planet can provide in a sustainable basis. She said according to research that by 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same, “we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.”

She however noted that the Nigeria government remains committed to establishing relevant policies and action plans, including the National Policy on Environment, Forestry Policy; Drought and Desertification Action Plans and National Adaptation Strategy Plan of Action on Climate Change.
