Samsung had denied any wrongdoing and argued instead that Apple had infringed on its smartphone features too.

But the $119.6m damages won by Apple might not be a victory at all, Brian Love, a Santa Clara University law professor told the BBC.

"This amount is less than 10% of the amount Apple requested and probably doesn't surpass by too much the amount Apple spent litigating this case," Love said.

Apple, which had originally sought for $2bn at the trial, was also accused of infringing on Samsung's patents and awarded $158,000 in damages.

The patent battles between Samsung and Apple, the world's top two smartphone makers has been on for several years.
