Watch this throwback interview with singer on breaking into the industry
It’s easy to believe that Wizkid who is Africa’s superstar, has always been like this.
The Nigerian musician is currently at the highest point in his career, working with Drake, Chris Brown, and other international pop stars.
But it hasn’t always be so. And today, Pulse has stumbled upon an interview that presents the early days of Wizkid. This was before the lights became brighter, the songs crossed borders, and the celebrity exploded.
This was Wizkid at 20 years old, after he has signed with Banky W, and released the smash hit single ‘Holla at your boy’. Looking extremely younger than this current version, with his trademark smile and glib responses, he granted an interview in Lagos, which you can watch above.
The gifted singer talked about how he picked up music at a tender age, and M.I Abaga giving him an opportunity to feature on his album.
He starts off by attempting to differentiate his personal life from the star music persona.
"Wizkid is just that dude that cant seem to hide Ayo balogun is that cool dude who doesnt like going out and sleeps a lot," he explained.
He then talks about his music beginnings.
“I dropped an album when I was 11 in church,” Wizkid reveals talking about working with the now defunct group Rooftop MCs and OJB.
The youngster also mentioned working with Naeto C, who taught him the basics of how to write and make music.
Age 15 was when Wizkid then decided he wanted to take the music seriously, which saw him working with Sound Sultan and a couple other artists in the game then, and watching 2face work on his second solo album “ Grass 2 Grace.”
Wizkid narrated how the collaboration with MI came about,
He explains how there was a show in Abeokuta, where MI forgot his T-shirt in his bag, then took it to his home after church on a Sunday.
Then MI gave him a beat he made, which Wizkid jumped on, and within like 15 minutes I was done recording.
“MI was like Yo Wizzy I have this beat, I don’t know what to do with it nothing to do and I was like ok let me listen to it, and in 15 minutes I was done,” speaking of the track ‘Fast cars fast money’ on MI’s debutalbum “Talk About It”.
This led to him signing with Banky W’s EME and recording again with M.I on subsequent projects and how that resulted into more collabos with M.I and the rest now being history. On working with MI, Wizkid said they have great working chemistry.
“Whenever I work with MI, there’s like this chemistry going on, from the first time I met MI about two years we just bonded.”
