Wizkid and Drake did something that hadn’t been done before. They showed the world that people were yearning for untraditional sounds, and you just have to give it to them.
The collaboration which created ‘One Dance’ was destined to happen. And its success still remains one of the highlights of world music in the past 5 years. Three artists drawn from different parts of the globe, (Nigeria, UK and US), came together for a song which stayed on the Billboard number 1 for 11 weeks. It broke all existing streaming records and won numerous awards.
That’s true commercial success, and every artist wants that. And that’s why there are numerous songs inspired by ‘One Dance’. It’s an Island formula, with a bounce that is infectious. It sits perfectly in both underground and mainstream dance circuits, and the formula is easy.
Check out the following songs, inspired by its success.
Wale – ‘Fine Girl’ ft Davido, Olamide
Off his “Shine” album, Nigerian-American rapper, Wale, is making this song his summer single, with promotion budget dedicated to it. It has two of Nigeria’s finest – Davido and Olamide – on it. Fine girl utilizes the vibes, and draws talent from Wizkid’s country to create a hit record.
French Montana – ‘Unforgettable’ ft Swae Lee
French Montana is the king of trends and collaboration. The US rapper latches on to any wave and rides it for profit. His song ‘Unforgettable’, which features Swae Lee (a member of successful group Rae Sremmund), is already a summer favourite. The video was shot in Uganda, and features a variety of dances from the locals.
Omarion – ‘Distance’
Where Omarion can smell a hit, there here he goes. The US singer is pushing the borders of what he is capable of with ‘Distance’. Talking about borders, the singer travelled down to South Africa, where Drake shot ‘One Dance’ to get the right ‘African’ vibe for the project.
Tyga – ‘1 of 1’
The rapper scored a personal victory by replicating the ‘One Dance’ formula. Only this time, he was both singer, rapper and everything else. He was critically bashed for biting too much off ‘One Dance’, but he doesn’t care. He has over 62 million Youtube views telling him he did what he had to do.
