Liverpool players owe it to the club and their supporters to secure a Champions League spot next season, stated midfielder Florian Wirtz after their elimination by Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals. The objective for Arne Slot's squad for the remainder of the campaign is to finish in the top five to ensure Champions League participation next season. This Sunday, the Reds face Everton in a Merseyside derby.
"Our full focus is on the league until the end of the season," Wirtz told Liverpoolfc.com. "We have to qualify for the Champions League. We owe it to the club, and we owe it to the fans. We will do everything in our power, just as we did against Paris Saint-Germain. Our minimum goal for the rest of the season is fifth place," the German international added.
The Merseyside club currently sits in that position, holding a four-point lead over Chelsea with six rounds remaining.
"We tried everything against Paris Saint-Germain. The entire stadium was incredibly loud, and I commend the fans for that. We pushed from the first minute, but that crucial goal to spark a comeback never materialized. That's football – if you don't score goals, you won't win matches," Wirtz continued. "We had a two-goal deficit to overcome, and in such a situation, you need one in the first half. It didn't happen. It was tough to create chances, and we had more in the second half, but ultimately, we couldn't do it. Yes, we're angry, but we have to swallow it and look forward," he concluded.
