Although six rounds still remain in the 2026 Formula 1 season, Williams have already announced the name of next year's car, when the Grove-based outfit will celebrate their 50th anniversary.

The current chassis raced by Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz is designated the FW48. Following standard logic, next year's challenger would have been called the FW49. However, Williams have decided to name the car the FW50 to commemorate the special milestone.

This is not the first time Williams have skipped a number in their naming sequence. Back in 2017, the team ran the FW40 for their 40th anniversary, despite their 2016 car carrying the FW38 nameplate. With Williams fielding the FW43 and FW43B across 2020 and 2021 respectively, the team find themselves needing to break the sequential numbering once again.
