Widespread Frustration Over 'Farce' Surrounding Argentina and Lionel Messi: 'That Would Be a Real Statement'
Argentina's hard-fought victory has once again ignited debate surrounding refereeing decisions. According to Maduro, it's understandable that people are starting to question things. "Given the events with Trump (referring to the delayed suspension of US player Folarin Balogun), you can't help but wonder: is Argentina truly getting preferential treatment? They've had an easy path to the World Cup final and have already been awarded three penalties. Everything seems to be going their way…"
'Nonsensical Discussion'
Robert Maaskant, also present as an analyst, dismisses any conspiracy theories. "In my opinion, it's mainly due to the quality of the referees, but of course, you do start to think about it," the former coach admitted. However, he believed Egypt's disallowed goal was rightly overturned. "I find it incredibly nonsensical that there's a discussion about that, because it was one hundred percent a foul."
The penalty incident in the closing stages was also brought up. An Egyptian player was lightly held, but no penalty was awarded. According to Maduro, this could have been easily resolved. "You want a referee to go to the screen. Then at least he can take a look, but that didn't happen either."
Farce by Trump and Infantino
Maduro then referenced an interview with Hossam Hassan, Egypt's national coach. Hassan stated: if FIFA wants Argentina to win, why do other countries even bother participating? "And then he sees Gianni Infantino (the controversial FIFA president) waving the Egyptian flag shortly after… What a farce. Because of Trump and Infantino, we now think with every decision: could it really be predetermined? You don't want to think about football like that, and that's concerning."
'That would be a real statement'
Finally, Maduro came up with a striking idea to give a figurative middle finger to Donald Trump. "I would love it if the eventual World Cup winner, when they receive the trophy from Trump, would wait to celebrate until he's off the stage. He obviously desperately wants to be in the photo, so how great would it be if they just didn't grant him that. That would be a real statement," Maduro concluded.
