The Super Eagles and Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho has come under scathing criticisms after he failed to convert a golden chance late in the game against Manchester City on Monday night.

Manchester City needed all the maximum points to reclaim the top spot from Liverpool and were ahead courtesy a Vincent Kompany's belter scored on the 70th minute mark.

However, Leicester City's best chance in the game fell to Iheanacho who came on as a substitute for James Madison.

Teammate, Hamza Choudhury, threaded a through pass to the Nigerian which found him in acres of space with only the goalkeeper, Ederson, to beat.

Surprisingly, Iheanacho spurned the opportunity by sending the ball wide off the post to the relief of Manchester City players and fans.

Had he scored, Leicester may have left the Etihad with a point, and this would have meant a huge favour to Liverpool who were hoping for a City slip up in order to remain at the summit.

The old club conspiracy

Iheanacho's miss evidently did not go down well with some sections of fans, particularly the Liverpool faithfuls with some even going as far as suggesting that the former Manchester City striker deliberately did his ex employers a favour.

This insinuation has continued to spread like wild fire with reports coming out of England having it that some fans have initiated a "Petition to investigate Iheanacho's miss."

The petitioners would be seeking to establish an act of malfeasance on Kelechi's part, and try to link that to his Manchester City root.

While that may be extremely difficult to prove, what has been easily glaring is how inexplicably Iheanacho's form has considerably nosedived since he joined Leicester.

Leicester City coach, Brendan Rodgers could not also hide is frustration towards Kelechi after the game.

When asked about his thought on the missed opportunity during the post-match interview, Rodgers replied with his face bleeding disappointment "he should score, I said that to him afterwards, in the big games, there's no many moments........"

Rodgers' reaction is well understood given the fact that no manager goes into a game with aim of losing. However, there are insinuations in some quarters that beneath the Northern Irish Coach's discontent lies a great love for old club.

Brendan Rodgers managed Liverpool for over three years, and took the Anfield giants agonisingly close to winning the league in 2013-2014 season. Even though he was sacked in 2015 after a series of bad results, it is believed that the Leicester City manager was hoping to lend his former employers a helping hand in their push for a Premier League trophy for the first time since 1990.
