Who did this to you? Famous Football Club Changes Crest, Fans Unsparing with Criticism
Olympique Marseille is currently battling for a spot in next season's Champions League. The club sits fourth in the domestic league table, a position that guarantees entry into the fourth qualifying round, but their standing is far from secure. The league situation is incredibly tight, with fifth-placed Monaco on equal points and sixth-placed Lyon just a single point behind.
The Marseille squad still has a chance for direct qualification into the Champions League group stage, which is secured by the top three spots, as they are only one point adrift of third-placed Lille. However, domestic league skirmishes have momentarily taken a backseat, at least among fans who are displeased with the decision to change the club's crest.
"Every line has its purpose. Every detail tells our story. The crest evolves, the passion remains eternal," the club stated in the video description introducing the new logo. The letter "M" is now enclosed within a circle, a nod to the crest from 1993 when the team triumphed in the Champions League. The designers' intention was to merge characteristic elements from various periods of the club's history.
"Through this evolution, Olympique Marseille lays the foundations for a strong identity, deeply rooted in history, created to endure and accompany the club through the next phases of its development," reads the official statement.
However, the change has not been met with a particularly warm reception from the fans. "Who did this to you, master?" is one of many similar comments.
