Formula 1 has officially announced its return to Africa for the first time since 1993, with a brand-new race in Rwanda set to be named the African Grand Prix.

The event is slated to debut at the start of the next decade, though an exact timeline has yet to be confirmed. One thing is certain: the race will buck F1's recent trend towards street circuits, taking place on a dedicated permanent track instead.

The circuit will be located in Bugesera in eastern Rwanda, roughly 40 kilometres south of the capital, Kigali, adjacent to the new international airport. While the layout is still being finalised, the project is a collaboration between Wurz Design—owned by former F1 driver Alex Wurz—and Tilke Engineers & Architects, Hermann Tilke's renowned firm behind many of modern Formula 1's venues. The track will utilise the natural topography of Rwanda, known as the 'Land of a Thousand Hills', promising significant elevation changes over the course of a lap.

Built to meet the highest standards, the circuit is part of a major initiative led by Rwanda's Ministry of Development to boost tourism, sports, and national infrastructure. Alongside Formula 1, the multi-purpose facility will host other international motorsport series, major events, and conferences on an annual basis.
