"We score against Zvezda, jump off the bench, and someone smacks you: 'Sit down!' " /VIDEO/
Another thrilling week of basketball is in the books, with all of Europe turning its eyes to Belgrade, where Partizan hosted Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet in yet another unforgettable Eternal Derby.
Following a dramatic overtime clash, the Black-and-Whites edged past their fiercest rivals 85-82 in an encounter that will be talked about for days.
This week's guest on Sportal's podcast KabarEL was former player and current analyst Nemanja Bešović, who broke down Thursday night's blockbuster.
This was an old-school derby. The arena was packed to the rafters, complete with all the chaotic elements that might not be ideal, but are an inseparable part of this rivalry. In my opinion, it was a world-class spectacle. Partizan pushed forward emphatically along the path they set at the start of the season, sticking firmly to their philosophy and established hierarchy. Zvezda might possess more individual talent, but Penarroya's tactical preparation, combined with their self-belief, gave Partizan the decisive edge. Partizan had a clearer game plan, entered the contest better prepared, and knew exactly what needed to be done. Carlik Jones did everything—and then some. Once he found his rhythm, he was practically unstoppable. — Nemanja Bešović
Bešović also reflected on standout moments from his playing days, particularly a wild derby in Železnik where Partizan mounted a comeback to stun Zvezda and clinch the national championship title.
That was a legendary game in Železnik during the domestic league finals—shaking backboards, objects raining onto the court, and the match was even moved from Pionir to Železnik to ramp up the pressure. There's a safety barrier behind the benches, but fans are right above you. We'd score, jump off the bench celebrating, and someone would just smack you on the head and bark, 'Sit down!' I’ve played everywhere and seen a lot, but nothing quite compares to that. Vlade Jovanović did a remarkable job that season; I truly believe he's a very underrated coach. — Nemanja Bešović
During his playing career, Bešović plied his trade across the globe. Beyond Serbia, his journey took him to Belgium, Syria, Iraq, Indonesia, Qatar, and Taiwan—a stint that produced plenty of memorable anecdotes.
Far East Asia is a whole different world, especially Taiwan and Indonesia. Taipei is an incredible city. When I first stepped into my apartment, everything was automated at the push of a button—even things you didn't really need. You could move dishes from the dishwasher directly into a dryer, even if they were already dry. Out on the balcony, the clotheslines had built-in blowers to dry laundry faster. Taiwan left a lasting impression on me—the media and marketing presence was unbelievable. I even had my own action figures over there! They called me 'Nemo' because 'Nemanja' was tough for them to pronounce. After my very first game, half the front row was wearing Nemo fish hats, and some women were carrying Nemo-themed purses. It was pure entertainment. But once the show wrapped up, strict discipline and clear hierarchy took over. — Nemanja Bešović
