Switzerland and Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has been handed a two-year suspended sentence and a hefty fine after purchasing a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate during the pandemic.

"I accept this decision and take full responsibility," the 34-year-old Xhaka wrote in an Instagram post, clarifying the details of a case that made headlines in Switzerland last month.

The verdict also included a suspended fine of 150,000 Swiss francs. The player also confirmed that he has covered all legal costs.

Xhaka, who has made a record 152 appearances for Switzerland, missed four Nations League fixtures over the past fortnight. During that time, he testified before the Lucerne public prosecutor's office, which had launched an investigation into a local doctor. Switzerland won all four matches in their captain's absence.

Xhaka admitted he had been afraid of the jab and did not trust the vaccine. "During this emotionally turbulent time, I bought a vaccination certificate instead of addressing my concerns through proper channels. It was a mistake, and I am deeply sorry. I take full responsibility for my actions and am cooperating fully with the authorities," Xhaka stated back in September when he confessed to the offence.
