The United Arab Emirates has warned the UK that it could pull billions of pounds in investment amid mounting tensions over the legal case against Manchester City, according to The Mirror. The report states that bilateral relations have come under increased strain following the independent commission's ruling finding the club guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules.
The issue was also addressed by Andy Burnham, who stated that he would be "very concerned" if the Abu Dhabi ownership were to walk away from Manchester City. Burnham described City Football Group and its affiliated entities as a "huge partner in building modern Manchester," pointing to their investments not only around the Etihad but across the wider city. His comments prompted political backlash, with the Liberal Democrats calling on him to disclose his contacts with the club's owners and UAE officials.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are appealing the commission's decision and continue to deny any wrongdoing. According to Reuters, the Premier League alleges the club used sham commercial contracts to inflate revenues and mask costs by more than £900 million over nearly a decade, while City maintain the verdict contains significant errors of both fact and law.
