Gay's presence in the 100 metres marked the first time he has competed since serving a one-year drugs ban.

However, Gay's comeback was overshadowed by the performance of Gatlin, who himself served four-year suspension after testing positive for a banned substance back in 2006.

Gatlin claimed victory in a world-lead time of 9.80 seconds as the 32-year-old continued the fine form he has showcased this season.

The 31-year-old Gay was close behind, finishing in 9.93secs, while Michael Rodgers made it an all-American top three with a season's best mark of 9.98secs.
