U.S. President Donald Trump has mocked French President Emmanuel Macron while recounting a phone call about the ongoing conflict involving Iran, claiming Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly” during remarks about the war.

Speaking during a discussion about the conflict and the lack of support from some European allies, Trump described reaching out to Macron to request military assistance in the Persian Gulf.

“Then I call France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly,” Trump said while narrating the exchange. According to him, he asked the French leader to send naval support to the Gulf as tensions escalated.

“I say Emmanuel, we’d love to have some help in the Gulf. If you could, could you please send ships immediately?” Trump said.

Trump claimed Macron declined the request, saying France could only consider sending assistance after the conflict had already been won.

“And he said, ‘No, no, no, we cannot do that. We can do it after the war is won,’” Trump said. “I said, ‘I don’t need them after the war is won.’”

The remarks come as the war involving Iran continues to expose divisions among Western allies, particularly within NATO.

Several European governments have been reluctant to participate directly in the U.S.-led military operations, citing concerns that the conflict could escalate into a wider regional crisis.

In recent days, both Spain and Italy have refused to allow American warplanes involved in the conflict to use their airspace or military bases, further highlighting tensions between Washington and its allies.

Trump has repeatedly criticised European leaders for what he says is a lack of support for the United States during the crisis.

He also recounted another conversation in which Macron attempted to reconnect later during the conflict.

According to Trump, the French president asked if he could call again the following week.

Trump said he rejected the request, claiming the outcome of the war was already clear.

“We’ve already won. I don’t need you anymore,” he said.

Macron has taken a more cautious position on the conflict, urging diplomatic solutions and warning that prolonged military operations in the Middle East could destabilise the region further.

The exchange highlights the growing friction between Washington and several European allies as the Iran conflict continues to reshape international alliances and geopolitical tensions.
