Jesse Derry is set to join Sporting for the 2026/2027 season. Despite agreeing to a contract extension with Chelsea, where he has been since last year, the 19-year-old English winger will head to Alvalade on loan.
As A BOLA reported on June 18th, Derry was a target for the Lions to bolster their wing, despite his limited senior experience. He has only made three senior appearances for the Blues – one in the Premier League and two in the FA Cup. Last season, he also played 22 matches for the U21 squad and eight for the juniors.
According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano this morning, Sporting will cover Derry's salary this season, but there is no purchase option clause included in the loan agreement.
Derry's arrival, who has 29 caps for England across the U17 and U19 levels with 16 goals, is not expected to preclude the signing of another, more experienced winger who can provide immediate impact. However, that investment might depend on the sale of Pedro Gonçalves, for whom concrete offers have yet to materialize.
