Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Championship side Charlton Athletic 5-1 in their Carabao Cup second-round clash. A new Spurs signing, introduced in the 71st minute, found the net just 11 minutes later. This victory marked Tottenham's first of the season, following their Premier League opening-day defeat to Brentford.
Roberto De Zerbi did not underestimate the match, fielding a strong lineup with five changes from the previous game. Summer acquisition Matheus Fernandes made his first start. Tottenham struggled to break down their opponents' defense in the first half, despite Charlton making ten changes from their win against West Ham last weekend. The visitors created two good chances before the opening goal.
Just before halftime, 19-year-old Mikey Moore opened the scoring, and Dominic Solanke doubled the lead right at the end of the half. Substitute Kevin Danso made it 3-0 in the 67th minute, heading in a free-kick delivery from Fernandes. Savinho was met with thunderous applause upon his introduction and did not disappoint. He bypassed two defenders and scored with a shot from the edge of the box. The Brazilian was also involved in the build-up to Tottenham's fifth goal, scored by Ben Davies. Shortly before the final whistle, Lloyd Jones netted a consolation goal for Charlton.
