Veteran Nigerian singer, Paul Play Dairo, is set to wage a legal battle against two of Nigeria's revered institutions – Etisalat & Nigerian Idols – after taking them to court over an alleged abuse of his copyrighted work, 'Mosorire'.
In a law suit (FHC/L/CS/581/2014) filed at the Federal High Court Lagos, Paul Play accused the defendants of reproducing his song ‘Mosorire’ on the show (Nigerian Idol) and airing it on TV as well as their Youtube channel without his consent.
The Nigerian R&B star has now slammed a N200m lawsuit against ‘Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services LTD otherwise known as ‘Etisalat‘ who are sponsors of the show and Optima Media Group Limited (rights owners and executive producers) for the alleged unauthorised use of his song ‘Mosorire’ on their talent hunt show ‘Nigerian Idol’.
Sources reveal that the case would have been resolved out of court, but the defendants were adamant, refusing to respond to Paul Play’s terrns when his lawyers contacted them over the breach of intellectual property.
Paul Play is reportedly seeking for N200m for special and general damages for the alleged flagrant and unlawful exploitation of his copyrighted work. The case is expected to be heard in court soon.
